This drawing features carefully finished drapery with few pentimenti or loose outlines. Cupid Spurning Riches, a study for a painting of 1654-55 (Royal Library, Windsor, inv. no. 2708) [Mahon and Turner, 1989, cat. no. 129) features an infant with closely similar physiognomy and some parallel hatching for conception of the figure in space. There exists a red chalk study of the same subject (Royal Library, Windsor, inv. no. 2572), but featuring a different composition that is unconnected with a known or documented project. By contrast to the careful articulation of her face, her fingers are only schematically indicated, while the contours of the child's naked body are succinctly described in short strokes of black chalk. This rare compositional study by Sir Joshua Reynolds--the leading British portrait painter of the eighteenth century, first president of the Royal Academy, an influential theoretician of art, and a distinguished collector--is not related to any known painting. But its allusion to the Madonna and Child, and severely classicizing, Michelangelesque style link it to the artist's most accomplished grand-manner portraits of the 1770s. Unlike Caravaggio, however, who is reputed never to have made preparatory drawings, Caracciolo continued to draw, following the practice that he learned from his first master, Belisario Corenzio. Yet, this study demonstrates the slightly piecemeal approach to composition and the seemingly disjointed limbs typical of caravaggismo, which favored emotion and drama over the accurate depiction of anatomy. (31.43 x 25.4 cm) (image, sheet), Red chalk heightened with white, France, 17th century, Verdier was a prize-winning student at the Royal Academy at Paris which resulted in his election as an academician in 1678. In 1685, he was married to a niece of Charles Le Brun (161990), first painter to King Louis XIV, director of the Royal Academy and the Gobelins tapestry factory, and, in effect, the dictator of French artistic life until his death. Verdier received from Le Brun major commissions for the Trianon at Versailles and Gobelins. After 1699, Verdier devoted himself to drawing and engraving. Verdiers drawing of a kneeling woman, dating about 1677, is a study for a figure in a painting The Raising of Lazarus for the church of Notre-Dame, Paris. It epitomizes the manner dictated by the Royal Academy. Importance was attached to clear, distinct forms. Bold strokes of red chalk on tan paper define the contours of the figure. Precise parallel red chalk strokes impart volume and plasticity to the drapery. Subtle passages of white chalk achieve the highlights.

Here the boy poses in mounds of thick drapery while seated on a chair. The figure points directly at the artist - - a difficult pose sustained with the aid of a staff to support the boy's hand. Fenzoni represented this daringly foreshortened gesture with extraordinary skill.

(50.48 x 36.2 cm) (set into border), Red chalk on blue laid paper, Italy, 17th century, Carlo Maratti, arguably the preeminent painter in Rome in the late 17th century, executed this sheet of studies while designing mosaics for the Chapel of the Presentation of the Holy Virgin in St. Peter's. This boldly drawn male figure seated on clouds is the Old Testament prophet Balaam, who adorns one of the chapel's pendentives, that is, a triangular area beneath the dome. Maratti executed countless drawings for this important papal commission; at least eight extant studies can be associated with Balaam. In this one, Maratti focused on the figure's active pose, which would change very little in subsequent studies and in the final mosaic, and on the back of the sheet, he worked out Balaam's pointing hand gesture. In other drawings he continued to adjust various details, like the figure's head and the general placement of the drapery. Once every detail was perfected, Maratti, or a senior member of his large workshop, would have produced a full-scale drawing called a 'cartoon' for the mosaicist.
